Sun Exposure

Hyperpigmentation is a common skin concern. This is when small areas of the skin become darker than the surrounding skin. These dark patches can be triggered by sun exposure, and they commonly appear on the face, neck, chest and hands.

Does Sun Exposure Worsen Hyperpigmentation?

Yes! When you have hyperpigmentation, sun exposure makes it worse. This is due to melanin production – the pigment that gives your skin its color. When the skin is exposed to UV light from the sun, melanin production increases. The more melanin in the skin, the darker that area becomes.

Does Hyperpigmentation From Sun Go Away?

This depends on many factors including how long you have had the discoloration for, how often you expose your skin to sunlight and what skin type you have. If you’re concerned about excess pigmentation, it’s important to protect your skin from further damage by wearing a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day. Also avoid UV light from tanning beds.

How Long Does Sun Hyperpigmentation Last?

Sun spots can be permanent so it’s best to treat them as soon as possible after they appear.
